Midlife Mom: Faith, Perseverance and Legacy
Motherhood had always been a dream of mine. From a young age, I envisioned myself nurturing a child, guiding them through life’s milestones, and creating a family filled with love and laughter. However, as life often does, my journey to motherhood took a series of unexpected twists and turns, testing my faith, resilience, and ability to embrace the unpredictable.
After years of trying to conceive naturally, my husband and I faced the heartbreaking reality that we might not be able to have children biologically. The countless doctor visits, treatments, and months of waiting wore on us, but we remained hopeful. Despite our best efforts, treatments were unsuccessful, and the dream of carrying a child seemed to slip further from our grasp. The emotional toll was immense, leaving us questioning why we were faced with such challenges. It was during this time that we began to explore adoption as a way to build our family.
Adoption was not a decision we took lightly. The process was long, filled with endless paperwork, home visits, and an emotional rollercoaster of all the hoops we jumped through. The doubts crept in: Would we ever become parents? Yet, amidst the uncertainty, our faith remained a beacon of hope. We leaned on the support of our church community, who prayed with us, encouraged us, made phone calls on our behalf, and reminded us that God had a plan for our family.
After years that felt like an eternity, filled with countless God-sized miracles—including the unexpected reconnection of family members after more than 20 years, Beecher’s job loss, and his eventual acceptance of a position 3 1/2 hours away—we finally held our baby boy in our arms. The day we met him was the culmination of our deepest hopes and prayers, a moment that made all the waiting worth it. But our journey didn’t end there.
For 14 months, I found myself navigating the challenges of being a “single” working mom as Beecher relocated for his job. Our patience was tested in ways we couldn’t have imagined. After finally relocating to Indiana, we faced new challenges, with no family nearby to lean on and our son growing into a busy, curious toddler.
In those moments of exhaustion and frustration, we leaned heavily on our faith and church family, who became our extended support system. Their understanding and love surrounded us, filling the gaps where our family couldn’t—despite the difficulties, each day with our son brought profound joy. We cherished his laughter, celebrated every milestone, and reveled in the unique bond we were building as a family. Through the ups and downs, we discovered that our journey was one of resilience, love, and deep, abiding joy.
A few years later, the desire to expand our family grew stronger, and after failed in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, we decided to adopt again. This time, the process seemed even more daunting. The setbacks were frequent, and the emotional strain was heavier, but our faith never wavered. We knew that God had brought us our son and had a plan for our next child. After completing countless documents and interviews and almost two years of waiting, we were finally matched with a little girl from China. A few months after matching, we flew to China, along with 28 other families, to be joined as forever families. The moment we held her in our arms, all the pain and uncertainty faded away, replaced by overwhelming love and gratitude.
But life had yet another challenge in store for us. Shortly after bringing our daughter home, I was diagnosed with a spinal tumor. The diagnosis was a shock, and the subsequent surgery left me unable to care for our little one. My mother stepped in to help, coming to stay with us for over a month, and we faced this new trial as a family. It was a difficult time, filled with physical pain and emotional turmoil, but it also deepened our reliance on God’s strength and the love that bound us together.
Balancing demanding careers and raising two young children, both with their unique needs, was physically and emotionally exhausting. My husband was the pillar of strength as I went through years of physical therapy, and he managed not only his career but daycare drop-off and taking the kids to doctor’s appointments when I could not. There were days when I questioned whether I had the strength to continue, but I reminded myself that God had placed these children in our lives for a reason. I learned to release my expectations of what motherhood should look like and embrace the journey we were on. Through all the trials, I saw how God shaped me into the person He intended me to be—a mother who relied on His grace and trusted His providence.
As our children grew and thrived, I began to see the legacy we were building—a legacy of faith, perseverance, and unconditional love. Looking back on our journey, I marvel at the unexpected paths that led us to where we are today. Every challenge, every moment of doubt, was a step towards becoming the family we were meant to be. I am grateful for the trials that strengthened our bond and the faith that carried us through.
Now that both of our kids are married, I thank God for bringing them into our lives and allowing us to experience parenthood with all its trials and tribulations. We don’t get to see them as often as we’d like, but we know that God always watches over them, which gives us great comfort.
For those facing complex challenges, I hope my story serves as a reminder to trust in God’s plan. Life may not always unfold as we expect, but there is beauty in the unexpected. Embrace the journey, lean on your faith, and know that, in the end, God’s plan is always perfect.
